What does Tomsula Do?

I like Jim Tomsula. I really do. He was put in the impossible position of coaching a team with no real leaders on the field, a bunch of coaches no one wanted, players who retired, a silver-spooned owner who's never had to struggle in life and has had everything handed to him, and a QB he inherited that is as dumb as a doorknob. He had his chance being a head coach in NFL Europe, and the DL line coach the past decade. It can be assumed he is simply a puppet for the owner and the GM. He took a job no one in the league really wanted. Why did no one want it? Because no one wants to play for this owner.

My question though, is what does Tomsula actually do? I mean compare him to some of his peers like Belichick or Tomlin. Is there even a comparison? He doesn't have a notebook or anything in his hands..WFT is he doing? Is he strictly a motivational character for the players? Is he constantly having whoever is on the other end of his  walkie talkie headphones read him the Olive Garden weekend dinner specials? Is he figuring out how much copper piping it will take to cover the installation he's doing this week in Sebastopol? What does Tomsula do during the game on the sidelines?

A head coach should be able to stop the bleeding. A head coach should be able to read what the defense is doing, and work with the OC to adjust. A Head Coach should not call a shotgun handoff to Hyde from the 1 yard line, which will ultimately lead to a safety. What does Tomsula do?

The 49ers Final 53

So the niners have pared down their roster to the final 53. There were some notable cuts, and noticeable keeps:

CUT: Darnell Dockett - I truly don't undersatnd this move. One, the 49ers lack veteran leadership, especially after Patrick Willis and Justin Smith retired. Why not let Dockett fester on the bench until he gets strong enough to be a factor? Let him mentor Armstead, Carradine, Dial, etc? Oh, that's right, you want to save money. Let's hope Dockett doesn't get it all together, go back to AZ so him and Calais Campbell can destroy our O-Line with anger and vengeance.

CUT: Nick Moody - He was playing with the first unit while Wilhoite recovered and he looked good and made lots of tackles. Was he better than Bellore and/or Skov? Probably...but can he play special teams like them? Probably not.

KEEP: DeAndrew White - He could easily play his way into more PT than Quinton Patton. Patton has been a disappointment, and White looked great in the preseason.

KEEP: Kendall Hunter - They stashed him on IR and he could've easily been cut. It sounds like he doesn't have that initial burst after all the injuries. We'll see.

KEEP: Jarryd Hayne - Let's hope he gets activated on Sundays and shows what he can do on the returns. Thats a big if tho, as he might be on the 53 for marketing, which would be typical 49ers.

All in all, I expect the defense to be strong and keep the 49ers in most games. The corners are very young, as are the safteties behind Bethea. If that group can stay healthy and play to their potential, and if the DL can get some pressure on the QB, then this defense could be better than last year, even with the huge losses.

The key then, again, is Kaep. Can he see the 2nd and 3rd receivers? Did the work with the grocery bagger Kurt Warner improve his vision? Can Hyde/Bush/Davis take over where Gore left off? Can the O-Line, who looks extremely bad, solidify and put together some good play? We'll see. But at this point the key folks around the league are saying 7-9. I'd like to say 9-7. What do you think?

The 49ers are not a team...the 49ers are a Start Up!

Real quick...what lives in Silicon Valley, is run by a silver-spooned CEO with little or no actual experience, has billions in corporate sponsorships, is all green everything, and has hundreds of thousands of angry investors? A Dot Com Start Up? Yes! How about the San Francisco 49ers? Yes!

This team is raking in millions with damn near 100% corporate dollars supporting the new stadium. Levi's Stadium hosted Wrestlemania, and is hosting Super Bowl 50 this year. The team sells out every game, and boasted 61k fans for the preseason game against the Cowboys. Jed York is winning.

But as a sports fan, and someone who's had season tickets for almost 10 years, Jed York is losing where it counts most - on the field. He lost game changing starters, and gained when their salaries came off the books. Guys that were getting paid millions, like Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, even Chris Borland. What did Jed do to compensate for these huge losses off the field? Nothing. Why? Because football is a business and the 49ers are his dot com startup. Why spend more money when you know your team has no chance? Why sign or trade for a guy that could bolster your Offensive Line like Evan Mathis, when you can save the money and your team will have the same result?

When Jed sits there and waxes poetic about the glory days with his Uncle Eddie, and how he was just a little chap in the Candlestick locker room, etc., this really means nothing. He is not committed to winning on the field. If he was committed to winning, the 49ers would have spent some money on able replacements. If he did care about winning Tom Jimsula wouldn't be the most inexperienced head coach in the history of the NFL. If he did care about winning, he would hold a press conference addressing the personnel losses, turnover, etc, which he hasn't done. He's been silent. He's been counting his cash and preparing for a Super Bowl his own team has no chance of participating in.

If you are running a business, especially some shitty startup for some app, you save where you can. Once the core product is built, you can either expand on it and make it greater and seek to conquer the game, or you can sit there and let it run its course. It's plain to see Jed's focus is not on improving the team or spending money. And he doesn't need to explain it to anyone. He's typical Silicon Valley silver-spooned scum. He's never struggled for anything in life, and probably never will. A spoiled dot com CEO who moved the proudest franchise in sports to his domain, so he didn't have to travel everyday and so he could be closer to his favorite Zagat rated haunts in Santana Row.

Meanwhile, we, the real fans who stay loyal to the team and the players, are probably going to suffer watching another sub .500 season. Watching Kap run for his life with the shittiest offensive line in the history of the NFL in front of him. Watching everyone in Sili-Clara prosper as it plays host to the 2 best teams in football in SB50. There's an app for that, it's called the 49ers.

Great Article on 49er Fan Discontent by Ann Killion

An excellent article written by Ann Killion basically sums up how a lot of 49er fans feel. As a long time season ticket holder, we have been given no explanation from owner Jed York, only silence. Hell, he blocked me on all social media forums!
